Requirements

Like any profession, Mining requires a certain character level to learn new ranks. Make sure your character meets the requirements:

• Apprentice (1 – 75): unlocks at Level 5.
• Journeyman (75 – 150): Requires Level 10 (and skill 50).
• Expert (150 – 225): available at Level 20 (and skill 125).
• Artisan (225 – 300): Requires Level 35 (and skill 200).
• Master (300 – 375): unlocks at Level 50.

Master level trainers are located in Outland (Thrallmar/Honor Hold). To learn this level at level 50, your character will need a summon (Warlock) or portal (Mage) to Shattrath, as only characters level 58 and above are allowed to pass through the Dark Portal on foot.

Mining Profession general guide

Basic mechanics

Mining is similar to other gathering professions in World of Warcraft game. When learned, you get a gathering skill and can use tools specific to the profession.

• Mining: The player searches for veins/nodes in the open world and farms ore using a mining pick.
• Smelting: The extracted ore can be smelted into bars at a forge. This also levels up the skill, but only up to a certain level.
• Tool: You need a mining pick in your inventory to work. In TBC, you don’t need to hold it in your hand; it just needs to be in your bag.

Outland Ore Deposits

The Burning Crusade expansion introduced 4 new ore deposits for players to mine. They all differ in terms of rarity and variability:

• Fel Iron Ore: The basic ore in TBC, found throughout Outland, especially in Hellfire Peninsula. Mandatory to boost your level from 300 to 325-330.
• Adamantite Ore: The main ore, which comes in regular and rich (Rich Adamantite Deposit) varieties. Needed for most high-level crafting.
• Khorium Ore: A rare spawn ore that can appear in place of any other vein. Very expensive, needed for epic crafting and high-level recipes.
• Eternium Ore: A by-product that drops when mining other veins in Outland and is needed for high-end recipes.

Earning gold: Primal Motes

When mining ore in the Outland, there is a chance to get a Mote of Earth or a Mote of Fire. 10 Motes can be turned into 1 Primal Element (Primal Earth/Fire) by right-clicking on the stack. This is a stable source of additional income, as Primals are needed by absolutely all crafters. Both Motes and Primal elements can be sold for a good amount of gold on the Auction House.

Combination with Jewelcrafting

Many players choose to go with only one gathering profession, but there are a couple of other crafting professions that go well with Mining. An example of such chemistry is Jewelcrafting:

• The miner farms ore.
• The jeweler uses the Prospecting ability on this ore.
• Five units of ore yield gems.
• This is called “The Shuffle” – a way to turn cheap ore into expensive gems and dust (through enchanting).

Mining profession in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade is the best to start with if you don’t have gold. It supplies three other crafting professions: Blacksmithing, Engineering, and Jewelcrafting. Ore in Burning Crusade is always needed: both at the beginning of the phase and at the end for jewelry and consumables. The main disadvantage is competition. In the open world, you often have to fight in PvP for rich adamantite. Hostile enemy players will be your worst enemies while farming ore.
